안녕하세요, 조유나 입니다.
WTC 어학원에서의 첫 날… 100%영어만 써야 하는 규정 탓에 수줍어서 그저 웃음으로 대답을 대신 했는데… 그것도 잠시, 영어향상을 위한 열정이 모두같았기에 금새 브라질, 일본, 사우디 아라비아등에서 온 친구들과 친해졌고, 수업 외에도 영어로 이야기 할 기회가 너무 많았습니다. 그리고 방과 후 다양한 엑티비티등에 참여도 했었고, 주말이면 브라질 친구들과 파티를 즐기며 너무 재밌게 영어공부를 했습니다.
그러다 보니 비록 틀린 문장을 구사할 때도 많지만, 영어에 대한 두려움은 확실이 없어졌습니다.
그리고 개인적으로 잘생긴 알렉스 선생님과 함께하는 스파르타 잉글리쉬 클래스는 자주 하는 실수에 대한 집중 트래이닝을 했고, 틀린 문장을 바로 바로 피드백해 주셨습니다. 그리고 생활에 유용한 고급 단어를 무조건 외워라는 식이 아닌, 발표형식 게임형식으로 재밌게 주도 하셨습니다.
지금 까지도 배운 단어가 잊어버려 지지 않을 정도니까요. 지나고 보니 스피킹할 때 정말 도
움이 많이 된 수업이었습니다. 이렇게 5개월이란 짧았지만, 많은 것을 얻은 어학코스를 마치
게 되었습니다.
그리고 WTC에서 제공된 인터쉽 프로그램으로 왔기에 학원 졸업 전에 취업을 준비하였
습니다. 실전 영어를 위해 캐네디언과 함께 일하는 것, 그리고 나중에 레스토랑을 운영하고
싶은 꿈이 있었기에 호텔 레스토랑을 목표로 정했고, 그래서 영문 이력서, 영어 인터뷰까지
학원에서 도움을 받아 준비를 하였습니다.
그 결과 학원 졸업과 동시에 Best Western Hotel에요리사로 취업이 되는 행운도 함께 찾아왔습니다. 하루 7시간~8시간, 주 5일을 일하고 있으며,시급 12불에 +Tip 그리고 의료혜택, 휴가비 지원등 많은 혜택도 있습니다.
그래서 이 호텔에서 일하는 것이 너무 만족스럽습니다.
대부분의 주 고객이 캐네디언이며, 함께 일하는 메인쉐프와 다른 요리사들 서버들 코워커들이 모두 영어를 사용합니다.
처음엔 너무 빨리 말을 해서 못 알아듣고 답답함도 많았는데 매일 행동도 함께 보여지는 영어를 듣다보니 자연스럽게리스닝도 늘고, 아 이럴땐 이런 표현을 하구나… 하며 하루 하루 영어 실력도 쑥쑥 향상되는느낌을 받고 있습니다. 내년 4월이면 인턴쉽기간이 끝나지만, 회사측에서 LMO라는 비자를 지원받기로 약속되어, 어쩜 생각지도 못했던 캐나다 이민까지도 길이 보입니다.
물론 많이 힘이듭니다. 일보다는 영어 때문에… 더… 하지만, 무엇이든 그냥 얻어지는 것은 없고, 고통으로부터 배운다는 말도 있잖아요. 하루 하루 최선을 다 하다보면, 유창한 영어와, 저축, 요리경력, 영주권까지 얻을 수 있지 않은까 생각합니다. WTC어학원의 코업 프로그램이 아니였다면,캐나다에서 일하는 것 꿈조차 꾸지 못했을 겁니다.
(워홀대상이 안 되는 나이의 걸림돌이랄까요…)
WTC는 정말 제 인생에서 최고의 기회를 얻는 밑거름이 되어줬습니다.
그래서 학원측에정말 고마움을 전합니다.
여러분도 캐나다에 온 목적을 잊지 마시고, 꼭 무엇인가는 얻어 가시 길 바랍니다.
Hello, my name is Yuna Cho. On my first day at WTC Toronto, because of the English Only Policy at the school, I was shy and just smiling back when people were asking questions.
But my shyness disappeared soon when I became close friends with them. Everyone from different countries was passionate about improving their English. I hung out together a lot with students from Brazil, Japan, and Saudi Arabia and had a lot of chances to use my English outside of the classroom. I participated in many activities after class, and partied with classmates.
Even though I was making grammatical mistakes time to time, my fear and shyness toward speaking English disappeared. Personally, I loved Sparta class where I was trained to correct my common mistakes. Also Alex, the teacher, was very handsome,
too! After five months of training, my speaking skills have improved a lot and I gained confidence.
Thanks to an internship program at WTC Toronto, I prepared to get a job before the graduation. My goal was to improve my English by working with Canadians and to own a restaurant in the future, so I wanted to get a job at a hotel restaurant. Getting a help from WTC’s employment assistance program, I improved my resume and cover letters.
I practiced for job interviews a lot, too. As a result, I was very fortunate to find a job as an assistant chef at Best Western Hotel.
Most clients are Canadians and the head chef and other coworkers are Canadians. At first, it was difficult to understand what others were saying because they were speaking very fast. But working everyday with them really helped me improve my listening skills, and I can see the improvement every day.
My internship will be finished on next April, but the company will provide me with a LMO visa; I am thinking of immigrating to Canada.
Of course, I am very stressed out because of my English skills. But, I always remind myself: “no pain, no gain!” I try my best everyday and someday I will get work experience, fluent English skills, savings, and a permanent resident card.
Without WTC’s co-op program, I wouldn’t be able to have this opportunity. (there was an age limitation for getting an working holiday visa..) WTC provided me with the best opportunity of my life. I want to thank staffs at WTC for this. I hope that new students in the school won’t forget why they came to Canada, and really pursue what
they came for.
